"Government Transformation Programme" Open Day

Visiting the "Corruption" booth, and getting briefed by the Lab leads (pic by KwongWah)

I had a very good and friendly chat with Datuk Seri Idris Jala,
but I can't remember at all what I was talking about doing all these hand gestures!

I spent more than 3 hours at the "Government Transformation Programme (GTP)" Open Day at the Sunway Convention Centre this morning, looking at the various booths touting solutions to Prime Minister Najib's Key Result Areas (NKRAs).

I don't have time to write down all that I think at this point of time about some of the booths (Corruption, Crime, Urban Public Transport, Education) but the report below by Malaysiakini gives an overall flavour to my thoughts. ;-)

It's also interesting to note that the only Members of Parliament who visited the GTP Open Day was from Pakatan - Dr Hatta Ramli and myself in the morning, Lim Kit Siang, Teresa Kok and Fong Po Kuan in the afternoon. None came from Barisan Nasional... ;-)

Well, excerpts from the Malaysiakini report:
Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua described the exhibition as part of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's election manifesto for the upcoming 13th general election. He admitted that there were plenty of good suggestions and when asked if the opposition would be threatened by Najib's latest move, Pua replied, "If he is able to achieve it, yes".

Asked if he thought the civil servants were capable of implementing the proposals, Pua replied "No" without skipping a beat.

He also expressed doubts that cabinet ministers were in full support of the proposals made, such as the one to disclose all government tenders. He cited his recent three unsuccessful attempts in the Dewan Rakyat to seek more details of the controversial Matrade Convention Centre in Putrajaya.

"There were a lot of good suggestions made (in the six NKRA) but whether the government can really accept all these suggestions is a big question mark," he said.
From Bernama:
Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said it could not be denied that the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) Board, led by its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala, had done a decent job.

"There are many great ideas expressed by the laboratories in the six areas, such as education and crime," he told reporters here.

"However, there is still room for improvement as these ideas are not complete as admitted by the team themselves," he added.

"The team has came out with many good ideas and the next challenge for the government will be on implementing these ideas for the people's benefit," he said, adding that transparency in implementing projects would be one crucial challenge to the government.
From The Star:
PJ Utara MP Tony Pua said: "There is no denying that Pemandu has helped a lot in putting this together in six weeks but the proof is in the doing."
(I actually said "pudding" but the reporter wrote "doing". Maybe I need to work on my Malaysian English ;-))

These are political LSD - Angel Dust. If they are serious about corruption, it must have a program to systematically replace leaders, ALL OF THEM - hundreds maybe thousands, with new blood untainted by the old. The corrupted do not reform themselves just like drug addicts do not get rid of their addiction themselves. In the UMNO/BN context, they do not even perform when there is a even chance of success much less only a small chance and its a very very small chance.

Idris Jala is like the new idealsitic drug addict councillor that has never been in the trenches of the dark side of human depravity. His education has not even completed yet and he is asked to do a job that many and far better than him have failed.

The old cartoon serial 'Transformer - more than meets the eye' comes to my mind.

I think the reporter wasn't used to the English expression and assumed 'doing' to be most appropriate in that context.

My personal experience in starting a Petition to KTMB which has yet to see any response from someone responsible in the GLC, has given me the impression that only ruling politicians or strong political pressure can change things. So much for transformation.

re the 1st pic. i bet the guy gesturing to yb pua feels absolutely no passion about fighting corruption.

to people like him, it's always dreaming about tea-time and those precious few hours of friday "prayer" sessions - with all due respect to genuine friday prayers practitioners.

look, the type of board messages in the pic, juxtaposed with that gler, is typical of malaysian civil servants attitude - it's all showbusiness. just show.

NAJIB has ALREADY FAILED. What has actually improved over the last year? Nothing. And he came in with huge popularity and backing from his party.

The issue is can Najib REDEEM himself. Redemption is a lot harder and the man has never shown guilt in his entire life. What hope is redemption when there is no admission of guilt?

For a 6-wk work, they have done a decent job. Some of the ideas are good and commendable. I only managed to spend most of my time at the Education booth. My doubt are as follows: 1. the fact that the cabinet did not approve the 1Malaysia booth, says that the implementation will be an uphill task; 2) does the ministry officials have the "brain", the ability and the endurance to see this through; 3) many of these ideas actually cut across ministries to make it realistic and/or implementable. Has the lab look at these "integration" issues; 4) As is, there are "little napoleans" at the state level. These ideas/initiatives will mean they will have less, if at all, power anymore. Will they let them go without a fight? Malaysia has seen so many blueprints, plans before. Implementation has been questionable. Let alone maintenance/support. We'll see.

No BN YBs came because they are not interested but only interested in their pockets and position.

If the PM is around then you can see all BN YBs will flock like bees to the booth.

BN MPs are simply not interested in their work. Simple as that

Dear Comment-ors,
It's easy to complain.
The perceived government stupidity is one thing, but it's easily matched my your cowardice. If you think (or know) that you're right, why remain anonymous? How will you contribute to the desired change when all you do is complain... behind the curtain! Stand up and face the fight. Don't just talk and hope someone else will walk it. Otherwise you'll be just like one of them.
