Baby Yok Shan

Some of you might remember about 3 months back, there was a major tradegy involving Tengku Ampuan Rahiman hospital in Klang with a newborn, Lai Yok Shan. Through medical negligence on the part of the hospital staff and administration, her left arm was infected, became gangrenous and subsequently, had to be amputated.

What was most outrageous was the fact that despite the initial hullaboo, after which a panel of top specialists were appointed to look after baby Yok Shan, it became apparent that these "specialists" were clearly not doing their work. Parliamentary Opposition leader, Sdr Lim Kit Siang has written on his blog post back in September:
Lai’s parents, her father Lai Kian Khee, 24 and mother Nur Tuemthong, were told on National Day eve that Yok Shan will undergo an operation expected to last from two to four hours on Sept 1 - a day after 50th Merdeka National Day - to amputate her left arm, but in actual fact, no amputation was needed as the blackened arm came off when the orthopaedic surgeon lifted and turned it.

This showed how little the panel of medical specialists knew about Yok Shan’s condition despite all the hullabaloo about its establishment to treat the baby girl!

Well, approximately 10 days ago, baby Yok Shan finally received a letter offering compensation to baby Yok Shan, who was represented by DAP Selangor Legal Bureau Chief, Sdr Lim Lip Eng. When the offer was made known to the parents, they were clearly not satisfied with the offer. And despite running the risk of a protracted legal case by seeking higher compensation via the courts, the parents decided that it was the best option for baby Yok Shan.

DAP national legal bureau member, senior lawyer Sdr Gobind Singh Deo (son of DAP strongman, if you are not aware) took up the case and filed a suit against the Government asking for in excess of RM2 million in damages.

What do you think? Check out the blog, http://yokshan.blogspot.com for additional footage and details.

Dont just take the blame game route, take action to secure justice. This is not politics and such interference could only backfire , and everybody lose.

NEP DOCTORS, NEP IDIOT MINISTERS, what next?

Blame game again :( So even if we help it is not going to be appreciated, so why bother, sad it to come to this

We are taking ACTION!!!

Wow...I'm speechless...they are not even remotely sorry for the entire incident. By the time baby Yok Shan reaches her teens, this is probably not even enough for a prosthetic forearm!

It was reported only RM2 million claim as compensation from the father. This is nothing compared with the multi million corrupted out from government coffers in the Auditor General report. DAP should advise to file for more claims.

According to the government, its hospitals are on par with those overseas and Malaysians should not resort to treatment overseas.
But when the ministers and other senior government officials as well as the well heeled and well connected needed medical treatment, where do they go?
Overseas, of course!
Looks like the local hospitals are only fit the the poor and disconnected!
This case speaks volumes of our local government hospitals!
Yet our government has no qualms AT ALL about spewing lies! And more lies!
However, it looks like their days of spewing lies and more lies are going to be numbered.
In fact, the shocking performance of the incumbent PM is a bonus to Malaysians.
HE REALLY OPENED THEIR EYES TO THE DEPLORABLE WAY THIS COUNTRY IS GOVERNED.
And the people are galvanised into seeking change!

I agree that the compensation is a bit too low for the mistake of such magnitude.

About the amputation despite the gangrenous arm falling off, I would say that it's not fair to throw accusations before we know the entire picture. When a gangrenous arm falls off, it's not like it's as clean as a surgical cut, so there might be some stump attached to the body, infection, wound infection etc, so some sort of surgical amputation to clean up the remaining parts might well be needed.

RM2.0million!!!
Gobind, I am disappointed, very disappointed with you. It should be RM20.0million.
Think... the child will be without a left arm. Makes her life soooooo difficult.
Yes, Gobind, make it 20m. these blundering idiots needs to be made responsible and pay for their blunders.

RM2 mil for an arm? Ask that bastard doctor to chop his arm off, I'll gladly start a pool to collect RM2 mil for him!! Why his face is never shown to the public, and not to mention all the f**k up doctors that took life becos of their silly mistakes? No name, no picture. Don't we have the right to be warn of fools like them? Is he still being allow to practice medicine?

And Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek even have the audacity to say why are Yok Shan's parents returning to that hospital is they have no confident in them. I'll tell him why.
IT'S BECOS:
(1) HE IS A MALAYSIAN, THAT'S HIS RIGHT TO USE THAT GOVT. HOSPITALS, OR WHICH EVER ONE HE CHOOSE.
(2) IF HE HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO GO TO A PRIVATE HOSPITAL, HE WOULD CERTAINLY GO.
(3) IT'S BECOS OF YOUR SCREW UP DOCTORS THAT COS HIS CHILD SUCH PAIN, SO U A**HOLE BETTER GOD DAMN WELL FIX IT.

Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is a parent. He should know the feeling when he was in the delivery room waiting anxiously for his baby to enter this world, with all limbs intact. Just imagine if that incident would have happen to him (or any of the VIPs). Heads will roll, that I can guarantee you.

But unfortunately, this has happen to a bloke who's not so important, a layman as ordinary as any of us.

I read with interest regarding the opinion of many which this issue has generated. I am a surgeon currently working in the UK. I don't know the exact pathology in this case but from my experience, gangrene can result in auto-amputation which may not necessary be apparent to the surgeon during the initial stages. I suppose to try to remove the arm which has gone gangrenous in front of the parents would be too traumatic for them and hence examination under anasthesia + amputation of the arm +/- further debridement of non-viable tissue would be best done under GA which I believe and hope is the case. I am not going into the political side of things as I am not clueed up in that area at all. I am not protecting doctors either if a gross negligence has occurred but as someone has already mentioned earlier, there is always another side to the story....this is simply what I think took place. It is uncommon for superficial skin infection to turn into gangrene unless it is infected by a type of really nasty bug. If such is the case, the only real option is amputation. The vast majority can be treated succesfully by antibiotics. Further, recognition of skin cellulitis (which is the first stage) is not difficult. A medical student can do that, so perhaps after a series of antibiotics that this girl has had, they did not improve her infection. Of course the other possibility is that the doctor(s) just missed it..which I must stressed again is too obvious to ignore.
