No to a Police State in Blogosphere

Nathaniel Tan, a 26 year old dedicated blogger, a Harvard University alumnus and an aide to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested under the Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) over allegations that he had documents linked to Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Johari Baharom’s alleged involvement in corruption.

To demonstrate our solidarity with Nathaniel who has been dealt with great injustice, to show our steadfast refusal to let the Government curb the democratisation impact of blogs and the Internet, and to voice our displeasure at the OSA, we are organising a forum with invited speakers from across the civil society with details as follows:
Venue: KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall
Date: 19th July 2007 (Thursday)
Time: 7.30 pm
Admission is Free; Bring Friends
The panel of Distinguished Speakers include:
  • Nathaniel Tan, Blogger & Aide to PKR Advisor*
  • Jeff Ooi, Protem Vice-President, All Blogs Malaysia
  • Harris Ibrahim, Lawyer & Founder of The People's Parliament
  • Nurul Izzah Anwar, Special Assistant to PKR Advisor
  • Lim Guan Eng, Secretary-General of DAP
  • Tony Pua, Economic Advisor to DAP Secretary-General
Chairperson: Soon Li Tsin, Journalist & Blogger

* We will be inviting Nathaniel to speak to us and relay his experiences at the Forum should he be released from remand on Tuesday, 17th July or before. We'll also be trying to leave as much time to the floor as possible, so as to enable greater interaction at the forum.

And for those who would like to find out a little more about the young man who wants to do so much for his country, check out the write up at Jeff's blog.

A quick note on the OSA:

The OSA in its current form allows for a government to administer this country covertly and in defiance of the accountability and transparency that is crucial to democratic process. As human rights lawyer, Malik Imtiaz says, "this impacts on all our lives in more ways that we can begin to understand as the government is given a means to thwart legitimate public interest by the forced suppression of material and relevant information."

See you there!! ;)

Hi Tony,

Since you joined DAP, your blog has turned into an opposition mouth piece.

Wish those neutral, critically-thought posts will come back to you soon.

Don't oppose for the sake of opposing. oppose for the sake of developing.

sincere fan.

Silence me Not,

Hey, thanks for your comment and support.

I wouldn't call this blog an opposition mouth piece though. It is however, "my" mouth piece ;)

The reason you don't get to read all the previous type analysis and articles is not because I don't think that way anymore. It's absolutely got to do with the fact that I no longer to time to write as much like that.

So, the only thing I'll blame joining the DAP officially is the fact that it has sucked up a lot of my time, leaving me with little to update the blogs.

However, I'll still be writing, just not as often ;) And just to be clear, I've not changed any of my personal opinion since I joined the party. If anything, they have been further enforced. ;)

Thanks once again for the support! ;)

Tony

hi
I don't knw hw good you are. From your brief CV, I suppose you are good. My friends and I hope candidates of high quality like you should represent the rakyat in the parliament. We wish you all the best!
One thing that confuses us is why it is PJ Utara? If you won, the rakyat got a new 90%quality parliamentary member instead of the formal 70%quality parliamentary member. There are many parliamentary candidates of the quality of below average. Why don't you contest there? Anyway, nothing can be change now. C U in the parliament.

Hi ! Bro Tony,

Why "Grilled toyo" the former Selangor MB is still at large ??!!

After so many wrong doings in his past............. he is still making so much noise.

Like he mentioned recently in his blog..... http://www.drkhir.com/2008/05/meniti-harapan-menanti-perubahan.html
"Saya melihat cara pentadbiran kerajaan sekarang lebih bersikap "looking forward" dan bukannya "forward looking". "Looking forward" lebih kepada mengharapkan yang bulat datang bergolek, yang pipis datang melayang. Untung sabut timbul, untung batu tenggelam. Kerajaan tidak ..............."

He also mentioned that The PR government shouldn't be wasting too much time in digging his past wrong doings and misdeeds.
If we go by his logic that means all the criminals must be released from jail as their crimes were committed in the past.

Why the prisoners are still rotting away in the jail waiting for their trial.

Set them free ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why still waiting .......!!!!!!

Be fair and square.

PR ,need your prompt action !!!
