Hadi v Pua?

Utusan Malaysia had a field day claiming that Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, PAS President specifically opposed my position with regards to the "controversial" suggestion at the Selangor state budget dialogue to remove discounts for luxury properties for bumiputeras.

UMNO's Muhyiddin and MCA leaders joined in the fun by claiming that Pakatan is inherently unstable due to policy or opinion differences. MCA's criticism's quite funny because, they don't have any opinion on any issues deemed controversial and will just submit to UMNO's views.

But before, we get into the act of throwing daggers at one another, here's a relook at what exactly Datuk Seri Hadi Awang said, as reported by HarakahDaily. In fact, if you don't trust the reporting by Harakah, then view the interview video for yourself here.

Hadi: Race-based policies to help poor un-Islamic
Harakahdaily

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 9: PAS president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang has reiterated his stance that any policy to help the poor should not be race-based, and similarly the issue of giving discount for properties should be looked at in the same perspective.

Commenting on a proposal by Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament Tony Pua to abolish Bumiputera discount for luxury residential properties above RM500,000, Hadi said although the suggestion was yet to be discussed, it was agreed that the focus should be on helping the poor regardless of race and address the mismanagement of the economy.

“We have yet to discuss anything on it in Pakatan Rakyat. We need to discuss it in the top leaderships council,” Hadi told reporters at a launching event of his latest book in Terengganu.

On whether he agreed that the current practice of giving discount to Bumiputeras even for high-end residential and commercial properties should be abolished, Hadi stressed that discounts for purchase of properties should be extended to all Malaysians and not just Malays.

“What’s happening today is that it did not reach the target group, it only benefited UMNO leaders,” he said.

'Not at the cost of others'

Saying it was understandable that most of the lower-income group were found among the Bumiputera who formed the majority in the country, Hadi said it helping them should not be at the cost of other communities.

“We need to consider the majority of the people who is plagued by poverty.

"At the same time, we (Muslims) must help other races which are also poor and in need of defence,” he added, saying it was wrong for Muslims to oppress other races while protecting the interest of the Malays only.

He further pointed out that the root of the problem could be found in Barisan Nasional's mismanagement of the economic system.

“I cannot understand the principles and the economic system adopted by the Barisan Nasional.

"We have a lot of subsidies, but there are too many mismanagement and leakages – hence, the problems are not subsidies but poor management."

Hadi also said Pua's suggestion may have stemmed out of unhappiness such mismanagement.

“Maybe he is not pleased with the management (of Bumi’s discount) but we need to look into implementation," he said.

Earlier, Hadi's statement appeared to have been taken out of context, with UMNO mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia reporting that he supported the practice of giving discounts for Bumiputeras to purchase high-end properties.

That's Utusan Melayu style. Twisting facts for its master's political advantages has been its tradition.

In principle, Hadi agrees with you but there is the practicality of politic even ideological PAS. If you do away with discount for high-end properties, you better have a program for small bumi businesses so that they can prosper and buy those high end properties.

I still think its best not to push the peddle on this.

Hi everyone,

As expected, UMNO and DPM resorts to twisting facts/statements and spinning!

Would the mass media dare to print Hadi's statement in full! You and I know the answer!

But, nonetheless, PAS should disseminate Hadi's statement in Harakah to as many M'sians as possible, so that in the end it's UMNO that is shooting its own foot for the twists and spins, whereby its credibility in future is questioned even more by the rakyat!! Who would then be able to believe in whatever statement that comes from UMNO and its leaders?

I always double, triple check anything that comes from those snakes.

I view your statement on the issue of removing discounts for luxury properties for bumiputeras is rather STUPID... and an act of stupidity... when the news was published in Malaysiakini... many non malay readers in their comments, viewed your statement as stupid too...

The reason... You did gave Perkasa, UMNO, BN, Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian and their allies a rather field day with your statement to attack PR - bagi bola tanggung.... while all these long, these people (UMNo goons) had labeled DAP as anti melayu, komunis etc.. to the Malays in the rural areas and your statement had only prove them to be right... to their target audience...

then PAs had to defend and to do damage control where TGH Hadi statement is one of them.... this is because... for your info, PAs contested most in the rural areas... more time is wasted in defending rather than working for the rakyat or to make offense... in football.. the best defending is to atatck...

The matter should be discussed first among the PR party leaders before any statement is released...

This Utusan paper,if I am the authority, would have them suspended for business and buried for good.Such a racialistic news media and liar and yet the govt never seems to take any action on them.Whereas others(the Chinese or the Tamil media)would be called up and threatened with licence suspension at the slightest comment on racial issues. This is clearly double standard and clear discrimination.

I THINK DAP'S STAND IS VERY CLEAR AND CONCISE. THERE IS NOT EVEN THE NEED TO DEFEND OR ATTACK.

IT'S A STATEMENT THAT BUMI DISCOUNT SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED CORRECTLY AS TO HELP THE POOR BUMI.

RICH BUMIS DO NOT NEED DISCOUNTS ANYWAY SO WHY NOT HELP MALAYSIANS WHO ARE IN NEED ?

THE QUESTION OF BOLA TANGGUNG OR TAK TANGGUNG NEVER ARISE AS DAP IN PAKATAN DO NOT OPERATE AS TO MASTER SERVANT BASIS LIKE BARISAN BUT RATHER MORE INDEPENDENT COHESION ALLIANCE.

PAKATAN HAS ONE OBJECTIVE WHICH IS TO HELP MALAYSIAN.

NO TWO WAY BOUT THAT.

MALAYSIAN ONCE AND FOR ALL

because there is no master servant role in PR, it should be discussed with all the parties first... DAP cannot act as a master party in PR by making statements without discussing it with PAS and PKR ! if not, DAP is like UMNO in BN.... it this also applies to PKR and PAS too...

Of course, Millionaire Bumis do not need discount.. but the way the statement was made is is strategically stupid... that's why it need to be discuss with other PR parties first so that UMNO and their balachis cannot exploit over it... if PR are busy defending from UMNO's attack, how can we have time to help all malaysians...???

Bodoh lah lu..

he disagreed with your act. He just said in subtle way without hurting u.

Dear Tony,

I totally agree with what you said.

However, I would propose to you that you should have put it differently.

IMHO, you should have insisted that abolishing the 7% discount for houses >500k but at the same time increasing the discount for <100k houses to 15%.

This would have neutralized any racially based attacks and opposition to your suggestion while making the opposing position indefensible for UMNO, Perkasa, and Utusan but at the same time giving PAS a strong reason to support you.

What do you think?

Hi Tony,
We can still keep the 7% discount for houses >500k for every property purchased by bumiputra buyer..but the "discount" will be channelled into "Yayasan Membasmi Kemiskinan"fund which help to build low-cost house for bumiputra.

This practice is inline with initial objective to help poor bumiputra.
